The Petersburg Virginia Organizing chapter works on a variety of local, state and national issues. The chapter works on immigration reform and health care reform. Virginia Organiznig Petersburg also works on restoring voting rights for former felons and registers voters locally. The chapter is also engaged in education and outreach around state budget and tax reform.

Frustrated. Furious. Fed up.

 

I don’t know about you, but I am disgusted about what is going on in Washington with the debt ceiling. Like most Americans, I have followed the debt ceiling circus daily for the last several weeks.  I am appalled to watch our country’s future be held hostage by conservative Tea Partiers who have no problem leading us to the brink of disaster. While I am relieved that it looks like our elected officials have arrived at some kind of compromise, my anger over how close we came to disaster remains.

 

House Vote on Car Title Lending: Money Wins Out Over Common Sense

Yesterday the House voted in favor of SB 1367 which would allow out of state drivers to take out a title loan in Virginia. The bill expands predatory lending and rolls back much of the progress made last year on car title lending. Now, our neighbors in Maryland, DC, West Virginia and North Carolina can come to Virginia to be preyed upon by predatory lenders who are not allowed to operate in their respective states.

Public Pressure Mounts To Update Virginia’s Rights Restoration Process

 

PETERSBURG, VA- As Governor Kaine wraps up his final two months in office, groups are pushing the Governor to sign an executive order effectively restoring the voting rights for the 300,000 disenfranchised former felons in Virginia. On Saturday, December 12, 2009 the Virginia Organizing Project, in partnership with Emmanuel Apostolic Temple in Petersburg held an event in favor of restoration of rights for former felons.
