Protecting civil liberties and human rights for all is a core American value. It defines the nation and is at the heart of the Bill of Rights. But today, our government is undermining American values by selectively enforcing laws based on religion, race or ethnicity and selectively enforcing laws, jailing people and denying them access to lawyers or the courts, and using secrecy to cover up abuses of individual rights.

We believe that all people should be treated fairly and with dignity in all aspects of life, regardless of race, class, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, ability or country of origin. Discrimination must be eliminated in our schools, communities and workplaces. Virginia Organizing leaders speak out against discrimination of all kinds whether it be fighting against housing discrimination in Richmond, fighting for increased accessibility in Fluvanna County or supporting gay rights in Roanoke.

We Are Virginia will bring King's message and a progressive vision of Virginia to our legislators, emphasizing a return to King’s principles of economic and social justice.

On Monday, September, 19th the Charlottesville  Virginia Organizing Chapter testified at the Charlottesville City Council and asked the council to set as a high priority the development and implementation of a strategy for moving more people of color into supervisory and managerial roles. The City Council agreed and is now moving forward with a plan.

 

Dismantling Racism in South Hampton Roads

Sareeta Spliggs and Tim McCarthy were two of the more than thirty participants that attended the Dismantling Racism Workshop in South Hampton Roads on September 17th. The group committed to put an action plan together to work locally to interrupt the oppressive cycle of systemic racism.

Is justice color blind? Over two million people are held in federal and state prisons and jails in the United States. According to a newly released U.S. Census Report, 67% of the people incarcerated in the U.S. are people of color—41% of whom are African American. As of April 2010, 51.5% of prisoners in federal prisons are incarcerated for drug related offenses, and about 20% of state prisoners are jailed for drug offenses.

Since I became interested in history and specifically the “Civil War”, I tried to understand why tens of thousands of poor whites supported the “rebel” cause. Most Southerners owned no slaves. Why did they give the slave owners so much support? I do not believe it was JUST states rights.

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, United for a Fair Economy released a new report today showing that conservative attacks on government, public sector workers, social safety nets and the progressive tax system widen the racial economic divide because they disproportionately harm Blacks and Latinos.
