Environmental Justice Overview

Virginia Organizing works with coalition partners on a number of different environmental issues. We support the work of organizations fighting for clean air and clean water for the Commonwealth. We support green jobs as a way of bringing employment to the state and bringing us closer to energy independence. We believe in enacting common sense solutions to environmental problems whether it means providing CFL light bulbs to low income communities in central Virginia or opposing harmful mountaintop removal in Southwest.

Today Virginia members of the House of Representatives including Reps. Cantor, Hurt, Griffith, Forbes, Rigell, Wittman and Goodlatte, voted against the Senate budget bill, which includes an extension on unemployment benefits and the payroll tax cut. Rep.

Jenn Peterson, the 2010 summer volunteer intern for the South Hampton Road's Chapter of Virginia Organizing, is literally making waves and big changes to the way Brown Bay Island handles its stormwater drainage problem. Jenn is a VCU masters student studying urban planning. She spent the last semester doing research and putting a plan together to address the local storm drainage issue in an environmentally friendly way. Jenn was so successfull that her plan will now be fully implemented by local non-profit group Lynnhaven River Now.

I'm writing to thank state Sen. Edd Houck for the courage he has shown in sponsoring Budget Amendment 448, which will require CSX to implement basic, necessary safety regulations [" Bill Would Limit Rail-Car Stays," Jan. 21].
