The thrill of voting rights

By William Garrett

If forced to pick one single experience from the summer to share with VOP supporters, I would choose an encounter that took place in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. Every time that I talked to a former felon who had not had their rights restored, it was an extremely fulfilling experience. This particular gentleman had been unable to vote for close to 20 years. He did not even know that he could have his voting rights reinstated. When I told him he could get his voting rights back, he was clearly very excited and indicated that he would take action that very afternoon. Many of the former felons I talked with were interested in getting their rights restored, but I especially enjoyed seeing this man become so excited about getting his rights back.
