Sharon LaMar joined the VOP staff as an apprentice organizer on October 1. She will be working in the Roanoke/Salem area.
“I felt very blessed when I was offered the opportunity to begin working as an apprentice community organizer with VOP,” LaMar said. “It is a pleasure to work with other dedicated and passionate individuals to promote social change.”
“I had a vision of working with individuals. I wanted to assist them in finding strength and resources to enable them to overcome obstacles to improve their quality of their lives,” LaMar said. “I was able to graduate from Radford University with a degree in Social Work. During the end of my field study, I began to realize I could make a bigger impact by working with organizations that focus on broader policy reforms and get regular folks involved in the democratic process. I was so happy to discover the Virginia Organizing Project since the organization really fits my interests and goals!”
“We are really excited to have Sharon be part of our staff expansion,” said Janice “Jay” Johnson, VOP Chairperson. “Another native Virginian working for long-term change — that’s what we like to see.”
