VOP’s Leadership Institute is successful

The Virginia Organizing Project sponsors a Leadership Institute each year to build a larger network of leaders across the state.

The purpose of this program is to:

  • build a common framework and a better understanding of organizing around the state
  • build a core of VOP leadership trained in community organizing, organizational development and issue analysis
  • build VOP as a strong grassroots political force that is effective at the state and local levels

Using popular education methodology, the program format includes participatory exercises, guest speakers, presentations and other activities. Past participants have described the program as redefining leadership, nonformulaic, not a textbook class, and a shared learning environment to do effective community work.

Participants in this year’s group shared the following comments:

“VOP’s Leadership Institute is very worthwhile, it’s relevant to community work, and it has helped me be a better community leader. I am more open and can discuss issues in an informative way and I have a better understanding of building relationships with people who may not agree with me.” — Ted LaMar

“Every session has an eye-opening experience that can be used in any situation. I can see life through clear lenses, now that my duty is to grow leaders for the future. We are creating communities that unite on issues, no matter where they come from or their status.” — Tosha Sanders

“The leadership sessions provided a safe zone for me to step out of my comfort zone, to explore and discuss issues relevant to our community. This experience has been invaluable and I will take what I have learned and carry with me as I continue my journey.” — Toni Maxey

The 2008 Leadership Institute dates are May 17-18, July 26-27, September 20-21, and November 8-9.
