South Hampton Roads: Virginia Organizing to Celebrate 5th Anniversary of Affordable Care Act

For Immediate Release: March 20, 2015

What: Affordable Care Act 5th Anniversary Celebration

When: Monday, March 23 at noon

Where: Corner of Constitution Drive and Bonney Road, Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach, Va.—The South Hampton Roads Chapter of Virginia Organizing will rally to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) on Monday, March 23 at noon and dedicate the corner of Constitution Drive and Bonney Road as the “Affordable Health Care Corner” to honor the gathering place of community members who rallied in support of affordable health care access.

Because of the ACA, about 385,000 Virginians have access to health insurance coverage and more have received the benefits of the law.

“My health insurance is better than it was, I kept the doctors I’ve had for years, and it’s cheaper – I love it!” said Virginia Organizing Chapter leader Sheila Walters.

“Thanks to the ACA, I finally have affordable health care insurance and no longer have to worry about having my health insurance dropped because of a pre-existing condition,” said another Virginia Organizing Chapter leader, Mary Kablach. “I still work very hard, but am now able to make ends meet. It makes me very sad that Virginia did not expand Medicaid because many other hard working people, making just a little less than me, cannot get access to affordable health care and peace of mind.”

Virginia Organizing organized in support of health care reform prior to the law being passed and worked to support the roll out once the ACA became law. Virginia Organizing has also rallied for Medicaid expansion in Virginia and helped raise the voices of those who are directly affected by lack of insurance because of the Virginia General Assembly’s failure to expand Medicaid for working, taxpaying Virginians.

This action is one of many events across Virginia coordinated by Virginia Organizing to support the Affordable Care Act and raise awareness about the need for further action on Medicaid expansion.

Virginia Organizing is a non-partisan statewide grassroots organization that brings people together to create a more just Virginia.
