Local Virginia Organizing Chapter to Hold Health Care Forum in Martinsville

For Immediate Release: December 4, 2015

What: Health care forum to provide information on the Affordable Care Act Marketplace and Medicaid expansion

When: Tuesday, December 8 at 6 p.m.

Where: American National University (905 Memorial Blvd N., Martinsville, VA 24112)

Martinsville, Va.—The Martinsville-Henry County Chapter of Virginia Organizing will hold a health care forum at American National University on Tuesday, December 8 at 6 p.m. Enroll Virginia will provide information on purchasing a health insurance plan through the Affordable Care Act’s Health Insurance Marketplace and Virginia Organizing leaders will help participants understand how to support Medicaid expansion.

Betty Chew, Martinsville-Henry County Chapter leader and resident of Henry County, is looking forward to helping people access health insurance, but is concerned by the thousands of people who fall into what is known as the Medicaid gap.

“The failure to expand Medicaid in Virginia has denied hundreds of thousands of Virginians health insurance,” said Chew. “These are hard working people who do not draw salaries that would enable them to afford insurance through ACA. It’s time to put politics aside and meet the needs of our people.”

Ellen Cabiness, a Virginia Organizing intern and organizer of this health care forum, hopes this forum will help educate local residents.

“Before I started my internship with Virginia Organizing, I didn’t know very much about the Affordable Care Act,” said Cabiness. “People should come learn what it is and how it can help them. If you don’t have health insurance, the ACA can help you get coverage. If you have health insurance but are paying a lot of money for it, it’s good to know the benefits and costs of coverage options through the health exchanges. All people deserve health care coverage.”
