Danville, Va.—The Danville Chapter of Virginia Organizing will hold two public demonstrations in support of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and health care for all people on Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, February 14. A rally will take place at noon at U.S. Representative Tom Garrett’s Danville office and a candlelight vigil will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Danville Regional Medical Center. These are among seven Virginia Organizing actions taking place across the state to protect health care in the last two weeks.

In addition to a demonstration, community members will share stories about how the Affordable Care Act has improved their lives and benefited their families and will call on Congress to improve health care coverage and expand access to affordable health care to more people.

“I am standing up for the Affordable Care Act to stop the repeal because I have a daughter who needs to remain on my health care plan until she is 26 years old,” said Pittsylvania County resident Dexter Miller. “She will be attending graduate school in two years. If it was repealed, it would leave too many people, including my daughter, without health care.”

“For me, protecting the Affordable Care Act is personal,” said Danville resident Carlene Wilson. “I am currently working a part-time job that doesn’t provide health insurance. That’s why the ACA is so important to me.”

In addition to Virginia Organizing Danville Chapter members, faith leaders, health care providers, and the organizers of the Virginia chapter of the Women’s March on Washington will also participate in these actions.

Virginia Organizing is calling on Congress to expand access to affordable health care, improve existing laws by closing gaps, reducing premiums, prescription drug costs, and deductibles, and increasing access to doctors and hospitals. Virginia Organizing is holding events across the state in January and February as Congress is in session. To find a full schedule of events, visit www.virginia-organizing.org/events.
